Meditate and Destroy Documentary Trailer
Posted by Jen under Uncategorized , Spirituality , Social ChangeI just finished reading Noah Levine’s book Dharma Punx, which is an autobiography.
This book especially hit home for me because he writes about losing his best friend to a heroine overdose. I grew up in an East Coast punk rock community collecting tattoos and raging against the system. Like Levine, I lost my best friend to a heroin overdose when I was 18 and I have also taken up spiritual practice as an anchor in a world that often doesn’t make too much sense to me. Now I’m about to finish my Masters degree to become a counselor.
Levine started out a rebellious punk rocker and was sent to prison for drugs and violence at the age of 17. He began practicing Buddhist meditation in 1988 and became a counselor. Now he leads meditation groups in national workshops, juvenile halls and prisons. He advocates for turning outer rebellion and dissatisfaction with injustices and suffering into inner revolution and outer service.
Check out this trailer for Meditate and Destroy, a biographical documentary about punk rock, spirituality, and inner rebellion.

I think this sort of approach is fascinating because while I’ve never been a full-fledged punk, so to speak, I’ve embraced a lot of the culture’s beliefs for years. But the punk culture I know is the Washington D.C. punk scene that formed around music-specifically straightedge-bands in the 1980s and were the exact opposite of violent and oppressive towards the self and others. In an opposite approach, we seek to align ourselves under the ideals of minimalism, taking care of our bodies and selves, and spreading a message of peace. This other side appeals to me because it’s something I never experienced in this way, and I wonder where the two paths can meet.

I’d love to see this film! I know - creating the intention to see this film keeps me suffering because I am separated from the thing that I want. Even when I see it, it will still be suffering.
Our cycles continue…
Thanks, Jen. It was great to meet you and Kent a few weeks ago when you were in town!

Now here’s a guy that has a grip and the control of his ego. There’s not enough people out there with his approach.
I wish him all the best with his film.
